Incontinence, or unplanned leaking of urine, is a problem for many women. Up to 20% of women suffer from urinary incontinence and the prevalence increases as women age. The most common cause of incontinence is childbirth although other activities such as lifting, chronic coughing or straining, and other medical problems can play a role. Many women are forced to wear a pad each day or limit their fluid intake due to the constant fear of leaking urine.
Fortunately, this is not something that a woman “just has to live with.” There are many treatment options available that can help a woman reclaim her independence and fix this sometimes embarrassing problem. These options include pelvic exercises, bladder training, and medications. For patients that don’t respond to conservative measures, we often are able to fix the problem by performing an outpatient procedure called a “sling.” This is most effective for treating stress incontinence that occurs with coughing, laughing, and sneezing.
